Viagra/Cialis/Levitra Injury Claims

Viagra was introduced in 1998 and sales of the "little blue pill" used to treat erectile dysfunction immediately soared. But a possible hitch developed recently when federal officials said they were investigating reports of blindness among men who used Viagra and the later-introduced impotence drugs Cialis and Levitra.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in late May that it had 43 reports of vision loss among men who used the popular drugs. Viagra alone has been used by 23 million men over the past seven years and its sales rose to $438 million in the first quarter of 2005.

The reports involved non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), a type of sudden vision loss that occurs when blood flow is blocked to the optic nerve. Although there is no direct evidence that the drugs cause blindness, one expert at the University of Minnesota who has studied Viagra said a connection is plausible since the drug works by affecting blood flow.

One man who suffered blindness after using Viagra is reportedly filing a lawsuit against the manufacturer, Pfizer Inc. and more lawsuits may follow.

The FDA said in recent news reports that it was in discussions with Pfizer and the makers of Cialis (Eli Lilly and Co.) and Levitra (GlaxoSmithKline) about altering the drugs' labels to mention possible blindness. (A new label has already been placed on Cialis' to note reports of NAION.) Of the 43 men who reported blindness, 38 took Viagra, four used Cialis and one used Levitra.
