Prempro is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) used by women to provide relief of menopausal symptoms - hot flashes, insomnia, mood bounces - as well as to prevent osteoporosis. However, the popular medication also has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, heart attack and stroke as well as blood clotting in the legs and lungs.

The discovery of these side effects came as a shock. Prempro, a combination estrogin/progestin therapy used by millions of women, had been the focus of a government-funded study conducted by the National Institutes of Health. The study of women 50 and older was supposed to have lasted 8-12 years. But the clinical trial was abruptly halted after just more than five years because the initial results were so alarming: Women taking Prempro suffered 26 percent more cases of breast cancer, 29 percent more heart attacks, 41 percent more strokes. The women given Prempro suffered twice as many - 100 percent more - blood clots. The results were so stark that the trial was stopped to prevent possible harm to more women.

(Other studies had shown that postmenopausal women who took estrogin only - with most using Premarin, part of the Prempro therapy - were at greater risk of suffering ovarian cancer if they used estrogin for longer periods, generally 10 years or more.)

Hormone replacement therapy is used by an estimated 14 million women in the United States who suffer often severe symptoms of menopause. Prempro is manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and it accounted for about $890 million of the company's $13.9 billion in sales in 2001 .
