What is Cylert/pemoline? Cylert, or the generic pemoline, is a tablet or chewable tablet administered orally. Cylert is used as a treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy (sudden attacks of uncontrollable sleepiness). How is Cylert used? Cylert / pemoline is taken in tablets and chewable tablets. What are the dangers and side effects associated with using Cylert? Of the 193 cases reported to the FDA, at least 13 were reportedly fatal. This is 4 to 17 times the rate expected in the general population, showing a significant risk for people on this medication. Why was Cylert discontinued? According to an Abbott spokesperson Cylert was discontinued because of falling sales, not safety questions. However, the nonprofit group Public Citizen petitioned the FDA on March 24, 2005 to remove Cylert and all generic versions of the drug from the market citing the increased risk of serious liver problems and death from liver failure.
