What is Bextra?

Bextra (valdecoxib) is a member of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory class of drugs, also known as NSAIDs. Bextra is used to reduce symptoms associated with osteoarthritis and adult rheumatoid arthritis such as pain and inflammation, in addition to treating painful menstrual symptoms.

What are some of the side effects of Bextra?

Side effects of the extended use of Bextra can range from indigestion or nausea to stomach pain and diarrhea. However, the more serious side effects include abdominal pain, tenderness, or discomfort ; bloody, black, or tarry stools ; bloody vomit ; unusual fatigue or lethargy ; y ellowing of the skin or eyes and unusual bruising or bleeding . Stevens-Johnson Syndrome , a rare but serious skin reaction, is also a known side effect in the use of Bextra.

Based on the serious side effects of Bextra, has the FDA done anything?

In November 2004, the FDA advised Pfizer, the maker of Bextra, that they were considering issuing a "black box" warning that would advise consumers of the serious risks in taking Bextra. "Black Box" warnings are the most serious the FDA issues and require warning language be displayed in bold type on product packaging. In a letter released by Pfizer on October 15, 2004, physicians were advised of the risks including the skin blistering condition known as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome .
