In November 2004, the FDA advised Pfizer, the maker of Bextra, that they were considering issuing a "black box" warning that would advise consumers of the serious risks in taking Bextra. "Black Box" warnings are the most serious the FDA issues and require warning language be displayed in bold type on product packaging. In a letter released by Pfizer on October 15, 2004, physicians were advised of the risks including the skin blistering condition known as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome .
