What is Avonex?

Avonex is a prescription only medicine used in the treatment and management of Multiple Sclerosis (“MS”). It is manufactured by Biogen Idec. The active ingredient in Avonex is interferon beta-1a. Studies have shown that Avonex may reduce the progression of MS and the frequency of relapses. Avonex studies also indicate that it may reduce the risk of MS in some people who have a symptom of MS.

What are the side effects of Avonex?

The FDA recently announced that Avonex may cause severe liver damage. In a letter that was posted on the FDA’s website, Biogen said that severe liver injury, including liver failure, ''has been reported rarely in patients taking Avonex.'' It said doctors should especially consider the risk when Avonex is used along with other drugs that can cause liver damage, or by patients who drink alcohol.

What is the connection between Avonex and Tysabri?

Both drugs are manufactured by Biogen. On February 28, 2005, Biogen suspended sales of Tysabri when two patients who had been using the drug contracted a rare viral brain infection, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy or PML. One of these patients died. Both patients were taking Avonex in addition to Tysabri.
