Atypical Antipsychotic Medications Lawyers
Zyprexa & Risperdal Drug Recall Litigation
Prescribed to treat illnesses ranging from anxiety to schizophrenia, atypical antipsychotic medications - including brand names such as Zyprexa and Risperdal - have been associated with reported cases of diabetes among users. The most severe cases have resulted in coma or death.
If you have taken Zyprexa or another of the atypical antipsychotic medications and subsequently contracted diabetes or hyperglycemia, you need the experience and resources of a national law firm like Kline & Specter. Call or e-mail us today for a free claim evaluation.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently asked manufacturers to add a warning statement on labels noting that hyperglycemia or elevated blood sugar levels have been reported in patients while taking these drugs. Britain's Medicines Control Agency has also warned that several Zyprexa patients have developed diabetes and related complications. In 2002, Japan's Health and Welfare Ministry reported similar side effects.
Zyprexa, made by Eli Lilly, has been the top-selling drug among the atypical antipsychotic medications, with sales of $3.7 billion last year. Other forms of the drug include Clozaril (generically clozapine, manufactured by Novartis), Risperdal (risperidone, Janssen), Seroquel (quetiapine, AstraZeneca), Geodon (ziprasidone, Pfizer), and Abilify (aripiprazole, Bristol Myers Squibb).
Zyprexa was first approved for use in the United States in 1996 for the treatment of schizophrenia, a mental illness in which patients suffer hallucinations, delusions and withdrawal. Four years later it was approved for short-term treatment of acute manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder.
In some cases, hyperglycemia has reportedly resolved when medication was discontinued, but some patients had to continue with anti-diabetic treatment even after they stopped taking the antipsychotic medication.
