Adderall Side Effects Claims

Adderall is a stimulant prescribed to children to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). An extended, once-a-day form of the drug, called Adderall XR, was considered a breakthrough because it allowed patients to skip midday doses taken during school hours.

But then came reports of at least 20 sudden deaths – 14 of them children – and strokes among Adderall XR users. These reports were alarming enough to convince Canadian health officials on Feb. 9, 2005 to order Shire Pharmaceuticals Group PLC to remove Adderall from the market in Canada.

Even though none of the reported deaths linked to Adderall occurred in Canada, health regulators there recorded eight separate reports of other adverse reactions ranging from skin rash to convulsions among Adderall patients.

Only 11,000 patients are prescribed Adderall XR in Canada. In the United States about 1 million people take one form of Adderall, with most, or roughly 700,000, taking Adderall XR .

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reviewed the same reports as Canadian health regulators and decided not to ban Adderall sales. The FDA approved Adderall XR (mixed salts of a single-entity amphetamine product) in October 2001.

For its part, Shire says it remains confident in the safety of its prescription drug. Adderall reportedly comprises 40 percent of the England-based company’s revenues. Shire, which has a subsidiary named Shire US Inc. based in Wayne, Pa., has its biggest Adderall sales in the United States, with $140 million in sales recorded for the third quarter of 2004.

Adderall has been found in classroom and home studies to reduce hyperactivity and impulsiveness in children with ADHD, which is considered the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder among children of school age. The medication was found to help these children focus, work and learn better. The extended, capsule form, Adderall XR, can be taken once in the morning before children get to school.

Shire had previously published side effects including anorexia, insomnia, abdominal pain, emotional liability and nervousness, but said the majority of those side effects were mild.
